On March 23rd, 1898 William E. Burton was shot to death by Paul Brown. Brown (36) was described as an "American mulatto".
The trial took place on November 4th, 1898 in the Court of Queen's Bench with Judge Dubuc residing. There was no recommendation of mercy from the Judge and Brown was sentenced to hang on December 23rd, 1898.
On February 2nd, 1899 the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment at the Stony Mountain Penitentiary.
