On December 19, 1921, thirty year old, millwright John Stanton took up a hammer and struck John Penny during a robbery.

Stanton was charged with murder and a trial held on November 23, 1925. The trial took place at the Court of King's Bench with Judge J.E. Adamson residing.

A.E. Horton and A.T. Searle were also accused but later acquitted.

Stanton was found guilty with no recommendation of mercy and sentenced to hang on February 9, 1926. An Order in Court of February 7, 1926, upheld the sentence and on February 9, 1926, Stanton was hanged at the Provincial Gaol in Winnipeg.
