On July 29th, 1945, in St. Boniface, fifteen year old Barbara Smith was stabbed to death by sixteen year old "half-breed" Joseph Proulx.
A trial was held at the Court of King's Bench between October 16-18, 1945, with Judge A.K. Dysart residing.
With a recommendation of mercy Proulx was found guilty and sentenced to hang on December 28, 1945.
By Order in Court of December 11, 1945, Proulx's sentence was commuted to life imprisonment at the Stony Mountain Penitentiary.
