Homicide #2009-07
Date - 2009-04-10
Victim - Caniuman, Evaristo (60)
Accused - McNabb, Joseph William (27)
Charge - Manslaughter
In 1974, Evaristo Caniuman arrived in Winnipeg, a political refugee from Chile. He lived for 35 years in the same apartment block at 530 Young Street. After many years of hard work and saving, Caniuman purchased that block for himself and became the landlord. He was a well-liked man, a shining example of how hard work and perseverance can bring success and happiness.
On April 10th, around 6:00pm, about 20 metres from the building where he spent most of his life, Caniuman was approached by another man. The stranger attacked and began to beat him. Caniuman fell to the ground and the attack continued. When police arrived, they found the attacker going through Caniuman's pockets, taking some keys and other small items.
Caniuman was rushed to hospital but died later of his injuries.
The police originally charged, 27-year-old, Joseph William McNabb, with the charge of robbery with a weapon. This charge was later upgraded to Manslaughter.
