Winnipeg Homicide

Several times a year in the province of Manitoba, a violent act takes a life. The crime holds our focus for a few days in the media. We read, watch and discuss. Stories of the victims and suspects, politics and change, fear and hope resound in all communities throughout the city for a time, then slowly fade.

Often the stories will resurface over the next weeks, months and years, as those accused of the crime work their way through the justice system. Diligent police work can uncover clues to unsolved cases, months or years after most have given up hope, and the vicitms have long faded from minds of most in the city.

Sometimes the stories just fade in and out quietly, with no great concern. Many of our communities have problems with domestic violence, sexual abuse, drugs and poverty. But for many of us, if it's not happening in your neighbourhood it can easily be brushed aside and forgotten.

As W.H. Auden so wisely tells us in the above the quote, "Murder....it is the one crime in which society has a direct interest".

So I've taken an interest and setup this collection of information. I have tried to be as accurate as possible using the available sources.

How I will proceed is a little unclear at the moment, I don't really have an agenda to push, but I have some ideas on how I'd like the site to progress in the future. I launched this in an unfinished state but it's designed to be a permanent work in progress.

As of January 2014, I've started to add data for homicides, disappearances and unsolved cases for the entire province.  I recently obtained some data up to 2002 that will assist in this endeavor.  After I've added the names I'll research the location and gather what other information I can for each case.  After the locations have been established I'll create seperate lists, one for Winnipeg and one for the rest of the province.

At this time, the data includes both Winnipeg and the province of Manitoba homicides, but much of the data needs sorting and details updates. Always a work in progress.

If you have a suggestion for the site, information to add or something to correct, I would be happy to hear from you.
